A security system 10 for permitting or inhibiting access to a secure area 12 includes an enclosed space 14 for interconnecting the secure 12 and an unsecured area 16, the enclosed space 14 being defined by a fixed barrier 18 and a displaceable surface 20. The surface 20 is rotatably displaceable between a secure condition in which access to the enclosed space 14 from the secure area 12 is permitted, a verification condition in which access to the enclosed space 14 is not permitted from the secure area 14 but is permitted from the unsecured area 16 and a primary condition in which access to the enclosed space 14 from the unsecured area 16 is also permitted.
