PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the accuracy of the optically obtained original point detection signal, together with the outputting of the angle positional signal with a multiplier circuit, in a wave form multiplier of the rotary encoder. SOLUTION: The rotary encoder comprises the rotary disk; the angle detection part on which a plurality of light transparent slits with prescribed intervals in the rotational direction are provided; the original point detection part which is provided at least one light transparent slit on the rotary disk; the first light-receiving element arranged facing the light source through the light transparent slits for photoelectrically converting the light from the light source; the second light-receiving element arranged mutually facing the light source via the light transparent slit of the original point detection part for photoelectrically converting the light from the light source; the waveform-shaping circuit for converting the detection signals of the first and the second light-receiving elements into rectangular waveforms; and the multiplier circuit for multiplying the rectangular wave signal of the first light-receiving element by an integral number of times.
