PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing carotenoids, especially astaxanthin (Ax) in good efficiency in the culture of a carotenoid-producing microorganisms, preferably bacteria, more preferably the bacterial of the genus Paracoccus by adding an iron salt in the midway of the culture. SOLUTION: The method for producing the carotenoids by the culture of the microorganisms comprises starting the culture of the microorganisms by an initial medium having composition ratio agreeing with that of inorganic elements contained in the microbial cells of the microorganisms to be cultured, and adding an iron salt in an amount (expressed in terms of weight) of 1/10 to 5 times as much as that of the iron salt contained in the initial medium when the density of the microbial cells reaches 50-90% of the maximum density of the microbial cell.
