PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reproducing device and a reproducing method to decrease a reproduction error rate without causing degradation in throughput of data reproduction, saturation in diffraction efficiency of a recording medium or decrease in encoding efficiency. SOLUTION: The device comprises: an area sensor that receives reproduced light and simultaneously outputs a pixel data group corresponding to one information symbol constituting a two-dimensional digital code; a maximum detecting means to detect the maximum in signals of the pixel data group; a minimum detecting means to detect the minimum in the signals of the pixel data group; a threshold determining means to determine a threshold for binarization from the maximum detected by the maximum detecting means and from the minimum detected by the minimum detecting means; and a comparator group to binarize the signals of the pixel data group according to the threshold determined by the threshold determining means.
