<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flow field plate or bipolar plate for a fuel cell which includes a carbide coating which makes the bipolar plate conductive, hydrophilic and stable in the fuel cell environment. <P>SOLUTION: Suitable carbides include, but are not to limited to, chromium carbide, titanium carbide, tantalum carbide, niobium carbide and zirconium carbide. The carbide coating is then polished or textured by a suitable process, such as laser etching, chemical etching or the like, to provide a surface morphology which makes the coating more hydrophilic, and further reduces a contact resistance on its surface. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
