PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing carotinoids, especially astaxanthin (Ax) by changing the feed rate of a carbon source in proportion to the respiratory rate of microorganisms, especially to the amount of the generated carbon dioxide in a feeding culture of the carotinoid-producing microorganisms to keep the concentration of the carbon source such as sugar in a culture solution at a low concentration, to inhibit the obstruction of the production of Ax, and the production of by-products such as an organic acid. SOLUTION: The method for producing the carotinoids by culturing the microorganisms having carotenoids-producing ability involves culturing the microorganisms while keeping the concentration of the carbon source in the culture solution containing the microorganisms at low concentration.
