<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform high-accuracy shape control by shifting first intermediate rolls to proper positions and adding allowance to the deflection of AS-U rolls without being depended on frictional resistance even when rolling speed is slow. <P>SOLUTION: A shape controlling device 2 performs the shape control of a material 15 to be rolled while controlling the deflection of the AS-U rolls 11 and the shifting positions of the first intermediate rolls 13 and controlling the pressing force to work rolls 14. At this time, the shifting position of the first intermediate roll is corrected on the basis of the actual results of the shape of the material to be rolled, the rolling speed, the deflection of the AS-U roll 11 and the shifting position of the first intermediate roll 13 with the position correcting device 3 for the first intermediate roll. In this way, the shape control can be performed because the the first intermediate roll 13 is in the proper position even when the deflection of the AS-U rolls 11 reaches a limited value.
