The method involves selecting two sub-areas (34a-34c) with respect to objects (4, 6) in each of two image data sets. A local measure for the position deviation of both the image data sets is determined in each sub-area. The local measure exceeds a local threshold, where both the image data sets are shifted to each other fixedly in the sub-areas. A total measure for the position deviation of both the image data sets is determined.
