PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact diaphragm device by reducing a space around a shutter aperture. SOLUTION: The diaphragm device covers the shutter aperture 2 with two vanes in cooperation with each other, thereby narrowing the aperture. The diaphragm device includes a diaphragm operating member 12 that moves to the fully opening position where two vanes 33, 38 are disposed on one side of the outer circumference of the shutter aperture 2 and the narrowing position where the two vanes 33, 38 are moved in the same direction, thereby covering the shutter aperture 2. When the two vanes 33, 38 are driven by the diaphragm operating member 12 and thereby moved to the first position A where they cover the shutter aperture 2, the two plates sufficiently cover the shutter aperture 2 in cooperation with each other. However, in the second position B where the two plates are retracted from the shutter aperture 2, a small space around the shutter aperture is enough to accommodate them as the small diaphragm plate takes little space.
