Polymers of butadiene in which at least 80% of the units are in a cis-1,4 configuration are made by polymerizing butadiene in the presence of a catalyst system formed by mixing (1) TiCl3I, (2) an organo-aluminium compound of the formula AlR3 or AlR2X, in which each R is a hydrocarbon radical and X is a halogen atom, and (3) an organic ether. Specified aluminium compounds are aluminium trimethyl, triethyl, triisobutyl, trihexadecyl, triphenyl, monomethyldiethyl, monoethyldimethyl, diethylmonochloride, and diisobutyl monobromide. The organic ether may be methyl, diethyl, din-propyl, diisopropyl, di-n-butyl, methyl ethyl, isopropyl ethyl, or isopropyl methyl ether, or ethylene oxide, furan, furfural, tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, or morpholine. The catalyst system may be preformed or formed in situ. The polymerization is generally effected in a hydrocarbon diluent, which may be dried by distillation over aluminium triisobutyl. |
