A method for preventing the unauthorized use of a terminal in a mobile communication system is provided to solve a problem that a lost terminal is registered to a different mobile communication provider that supports the same frequency band as that of a mobile communication provider to which the terminal belongs. A base station transmits messages for initializing traffic for a terminal that requests use registration to the terminal(310). The terminal transmits a preamble message to the base station in response(320). The base station transmits a BS ACK indicating that traffic has been initialized(330). The base station transmits a message for identifying a service provider(Maintenance Identification Order) to the terminal(340). The terminal compares a service provider identification code included in the message and a previously stored provider identification code, and if they are not identical, the terminal transitions to a lock state and informs a user that the terminal cannot be registered to the base station(345). The terminal transmits a release message(Release Order) requesting a connection termination(350). The base station transmits a response message to the release message(360). The base station discards a registration request message from the terminal and terminates its connection with the terminal(365).
