An electrophotographic image forming apparatus with an improved intermediate transfer unit setting structure is provided to prevent a transfer belt and a photosensitive drum from being damaged when an intermediate transfer unit is wrongly separated from the image forming apparatus by using a safety device. An electrophotographic image forming apparatus includes a developing unit(20,30), an intermediate transfer unit(10), and a locking member(171,172). The developing unit develops an image formed on a photosensitive drum. The intermediate transfer unit is detachably set in a frame(42) of the image forming apparatus and includes a transfer belt and a contact device for selectively making the transfer belt come into contact with the photosensitive drum. The locking member is operated in connection with the contact device and locks the intermediate transfer unit to the frame when the transfer belt comes into contact with the photosensitive drum.
