An hydraulic electrical generator device 1 comprises a plurality of water wheels (turbines) 3 arranged hydraulically in series, each wheel 3 driving its own electrical generator. Adjacent water wheels 3 may be driven in opposite directions, and those rotating in the same direction may be mechanically connected together. The first wheel 3 in the series may be fed by a pressure increasing venturi inlet 9. Means 33 may be provided to bypass one or more wheel 3 so as to allow said wheel(s) 3 to be selectively taken out of service. Each water wheel 3 may comprise a drum (51, figure 3) having vanes (53, figure 3) pivotally mounted thereto, the vanes (53) folding against the circumferential outer surface of the drum (51) when not in contact with the water flow. Each vane (53) may comprise a first section (57, figure 3) perpendicular to the circumference of the drum (51), and a second section (59, figure 3), extending from the first section (57), substantially parallel to the circumference of the drum (51). Step up gearing may be provided between the wheel and the electrical generator, the gearing taking the form of a toothed inner surface (71, figure 3) of the drum (51) which co-operates with a pinion gear (73, figure 3) of the electrical generator. |
