An apparatus and a method for driving an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) are provided to prevent movement flow of a moving image by generating a frame varying signal according to a movement of an image, and varying the number of frames of an image displayed on an image display unit according to the generated frame varying signal. An image display unit(102) displays an image. A driving circuit unit varies the number of frames of an image displayed on the image display unit according to a movement of the image. The driving circuit unit includes a data driver(104) supplying an image signal to the image display unit. A gate driver(106) supplies a scan signal to the image display unit. A frame varying unit(100) detects a movement vector from source data input from the outside, and generates modulation data and a frame varying signal for varying the number of frames of the image displayed on the image display unit. A timing controller(108) aligns the modulation data to supply the modulation data to the data driver, generates a data control signal to control the data driver, and simultaneously generates a gate control signal to control the gate driver.
