A method for preparing expanded polystyrene beads is provided to produce expanded polystyrene beads having a uniform particle size distribution and good heat insulation and excellent mechanical properties by using ethylenebisstearamide as a nucleating agent. The method for preparing expanded polystyrene beads comprises the steps of: (1) putting a dispersant into a reactor to evenly disperse the dispersant in water; (2) pulverizing ethylenebisstearamide to be used as a nucleating agent into powder with a size of 10mum or smaller; (3) adding a styrene monomer, a polymerization initiator, and the pulverized ethylenebisstearamide into the reactor, heating the mixture to 50-90°C, and stirring and polymerizing the mixture for 6hours at the same time; (4) when the polymerization rate of the styrene monomer reaches 60-90wt% during the polymerization step, putting a blowing agent into the reactor while raising the temperature to 120°C slowly; (5) cooling the reactor to 20-30°C and removing the surplus blowing agent; (6) recovering the prepared expanded polystyrene beads to be washed with water; and (7) drying the expanded polystyrene beads.
