An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) device and a driving method thereof are provided to prevent afterimages by maintaining a white state of respective pixels during a discharge operation when the power is turned off. An LCD device includes an optical detection unit(250), a controller(260), and a data driver(230). The optical detection unit detects light. The controller outputs digital white data during a predetermined time, when the light is not detected in the optical detection unit. The data driver converts the digital white data, which is output from the controller, into analog white data and supplies the converted analog white data to an LCD panel. The optical detection unit outputs a low signal to the controller, when the light is detected, and outputs a high signal to the controller, when the light is not detected.
