A robot for generating a plurality of emotions and an emotion generating method thereof are provided to enable the robot to naturally exchange an opinion by generating/expressing various emotions like a human being in response to an external condition or human reaction. A sensor(110) detects external environment information. A database(130) stores a predetermined list including actions permitted to the robot, the user reactions corresponding to each action of the robot, and information for preferred articles of the robot. The first emotion generator(121) generates the emotion corresponding to feature of the detected information if the detected information of the sensor is over a predetermined threshold value. The second emotion generator(122) generates the emotion corresponding to the feature of the detected information by reflecting the information detected in the sensor, the list stored in the database, internal robot information representing a power supply level of the robot and failure of an operation, and time passage. An instinct part(140) generates the emotion corresponding to the internal robot information.
