For securing network configuration data stored in devices connected to an automation network, a security message is transmitted to all the devices. The devices receive the security message (S1), verify its authenticity (S2), and analyze command data (S3) included in the message. In response to a security message, indicative of configuration disablement or enablement, the devices disable or enable (S4) selectively their mechanisms for altering the configuration data. By disabling alteration of configuration data, the devices are put in a secure mode preventing the configuration data from being altered maliciously or unintentionally.
