An apparatus and a method for protecting a reduction gear in a hybrid electric automobile is provided to prevent breakage of a drive system by detecting tooth damage of a reduction gear or differential gear. A waveform detecting unit(1) is mounted in a housing, and is rotated by a reduction gear or a differential gear to predict tooth damage due to non-uniform rotation of the reduction gear or differential gear. A controller(2) receives a signal outputted from the waveform detecting unit, and compares the signal with an input waveform pattern to determine the tooth damage. An alarm unit(4) generates an alarm to a driver if the controller receives a signal corresponding to the tooth damage.
