A method and an apparatus for controlling the physical layer of a mobile terminal in a mobile communication system are provided to efficiently control a transceiving stage of the physical layer of a mobile terminal through a physical layer transceiving controller and to transmit data through a physical layer transceiver interface at high speed. An apparatus for controlling the physical layer of a mobile terminal comprises a terminal physical layer interface handler(200), a terminal physical layer controller(300), a terminal transmission part(420), and a terminal reception part(440). The terminal physical layer interface handler(200) handles an upper layer(100) and a terminal physical layer interface. The terminal physical layer controller(300) comprises a terminal transmission controller(310) for controlling the terminal transmission part(420) and a terminal reception controller(320) for controlling the terminal reception part(440). The terminal transmission part(420), composed of a transmission buffer(421), an encoder(422), and a modulator(423), receives upstream data through the terminal physical layer interface handler(200) from the upper layer(100), performs buffering, encoding, and modulation, and transmits the data to an uplink physical channel. The terminal reception part(440) is composed of a synchronization acquisition part(444), a demodulator(443), a decoder(442), and a reception buffer(441). The terminal reception part(440) receives downstream data through a downlink physical channel, acquires synchronization, performs demodulation, decoding, and buffering, and transmits the data to the upper layer(100) through the terminal physical layer interface handler(200).
