PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the removing performance of aldehydes and to prevent the degradation of the performance in long term preservation by preparing an aldehyde removing agent used for an air purifying equipment and for removing aldehyde gas in air so as to have an oxygen-containing group reactive with the aldehyde group on the surface of activated carbon. SOLUTION: Through an activated carbon adsorbs ell a non-polar compound such as benzene and has low adsorptivity to a polar material such as water, the adsorptivity to the aldehyde of a low molecular weight compound having small numbers of carbon such as a formaldehyde or acetaldehyde is improved by giving the oxygen-containing functional group such as quinone group, carboxyl group, carbonyl group on the surface of activated carbon. The activated carbon having the oxygen-containing functional group is produced by activating with steam and in an oxidizing atmosphere in the activating process of activated carbon. The oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of the activated carbon are increased by treating the activated carbon further with ozone. |
