A device and a method for assigning knock sensors to cylinders of an internal combustion engine are provided to prevent erroneous assignment which deteriorates knocking detection and causes damage to an engine. A device assigns at least two knock sensors to at least two cylinders of an engine. The engine includes an operating cycle in which characterized acoustic signals(101~106) for each cylinder are generated. The knock sensors are arranged to evaluate the acoustic signals. The device includes a comparing unit for assigning knock sensors to the cylinders through the comparison of at least two characterized acoustic signals.
