An apparatus 2 for treating a hydrocarbon fuel comprises a fuel treatment chamber 4 with an inlet 8 and outlet 10, and means for imparting a plurality of shock waves to fuel within the treatment chamber at a frequency and intensity such as to increase its combustion efficiency. The shock waves / pulses are preferably applied to the liquid fuel by the movement of a magnetically responsive mass 14 (eg. iron wires) in contact with the fuel. Preferably, windings 20 are provided around the chamber and are pulsed with current, and the pulsing magnetic field generated causes the mass 14 to vibrate thereby cracking or dismantling the longer hydrocarbon chain molecules. During the vibrating the temperature of the fuel may be monitored. The intensity, frequency and duration of vibration may be adjustable. The apparatus is ideally incorporated in an internal combustion engine. |
