A method for providing a video call service using face recognition and a mobile terminal using the same are provided to allow a user to transfer his/her intention to the other party in a situation that voice call communication is not available. A program memory(102) stores software for driving various functions of a mobile terminal including an image capture function by using a camera(112) and protocol software for modulating and demodulating image data and a voice signal transmitted/received through a mobile communication network, and a face recognition program for extracting the user face from the image data and recognizing a character and a number. A microprocessor(120) controls a generation operation of a mobile terminal, transmits/receivers only image data except for voice data during video call communication, and provides the character or the number, as text or a voice signal, recognized from the image data to the user by driving the face recognition program stored in the program memory.
