An apparatus and a method for converting multimedia contents are provided to convert text data included in digital multimedia contents into a sound signal or inform a user that a text is displayed on a screen by using a sound signal. A multimedia contents converting apparatus(10) includes a content receiver(11), a content processor(12), a content output unit(13), and a converter(14). The content receiver receives multimedia contents through a digital broadcasting network. The content processor decodes the received multimedia contents to extract media data and scene information, confirms whether the extracted scene information includes text data, and extracts the text data from the scene information. The content output unit outputs the media data according to the scene information. The converter converts the extracted text data to a sound signal when the media data output, and adds the sound signal to the media data.
