An adaptive coefficient of resistance detection method for a continuously variable transmission is provided to maximize efficiency of the continuously variable transmission by calculating the coefficient of resistance between a belt and a pulley and updating a map table data, and calculating a pulley thrust. The method comprises the steps of: extracting a target pressure under a current driving condition by a variable transmission control unit in a steady state of a continuously variable transmission(S101,S102); detecting a real pressure adapted to a pulley surface from a pressure sensor, and judging whether the target pressure and the real pressure are identical(S103); detecting an engine torque and extracting the dynamic radius of the pulley if the two pressures are identical(S104,S105); calculating a coefficient of resistance between a belt and the pulley under the current driving condition(S106); and updating one-dimensional map table data set to the variable transmission control unit by the calculated coefficient of resistance(S107).
