An image processing system and a method for controlling a gain of a color flow image are provided to observe the color flow image by automatically controlling the gain of the color flow image based on a gain control width by selecting an optimal color flow image frame. An image processing method for controlling a gain of a color flow image includes the steps of: forming a plurality of color flow image frames(S110); selecting the color flow image frame having the highest speed(S120); setting an ROI(Region Of Interest) box on the selected color flow image frame(S130); forming a contour of a blood vessel based on the color flow image having the set ROI(S140); calculating a cross section of the blood vessel by using the formed blood vessel contour(S150); analyzing pixels showing a blood flow in the color flow image frame selected in the S120 step(S160); detecting the pixel having a pixel value of 1 or more(S170); calculating a cross section of the blood flow by using the detected pixel(S180); calculating a rate of the cross section based on the cross sections of the blood vessel and the blood flow(S190); determining that the calculated rate of the cross section is less than 1(S200); calculating gain increase corresponding to the calculated rate of the cross section(S210); increasing the gain of the color flow image(S220); calculating gain decrease corresponding to the calculated rate of the cross section(S230); decreasing the gain of the color flow image(S240); and determining whether a process for automatically controlling the gain of the color flow image is finished, and if the process is not finished, going back to the S110 step.
