A laser scanning unit and an image forming apparatus using the laser scanning unit are provided to reduce the thickness of an optical imaging element constructing an imaging optical system and achieve high optical performance with a simple configuration. A laser scanning unit includes a light source(1), a deflector(5), and an imaging optical system(LB). The deflector scans and deflects light emitted from the light source. The imaging optical system images the light defected by the deflector on a to-be-scanned plane(8). The imaging optical system includes a single optical imaging element(6) having a light-projecting face which has a convex form for a main scanning section.
