A method for selectively activating server applications, a computer network system, and a program storage apparatus are provided to realize a selective activation method for server applications so that a system manager can define various system states and appoint the time when a certain socket application can be initiated. A computer network system comprises a server computer(104), a plurality of client computers(108,110,112), a set of server applications to be loaded on the server computer(104), and a protocol stack to manage activation of the server applications. A system manager defines a plurality of states related to the computer network system. The system manager appoints conditions for judging whether each of the server applications can be activated in each of the defined states. The protocol stack manages activation of the server applications according to the appointed conditions.
