A semiconductor optical communication device is provided to prevent the power supply voltage applied to an LD(laser diode) from being influenced by a modulation signal by electrically isolating the LD and an EA(electro absorption modulator) formed on the same substrate from each other in the substrate and an isolation region. An LD and an EA are formed on the same substrate(11) at both sides of an isolation region. A laser beam generated from the LD is modulated and outputted. The substrate and the isolation region are made of an insulation material for electrically isolating the LD from the EA. The substrate can be a compound semiconductor substrate with an insulation property or without impurities, and the isolation region can have an insulation property by an ion implantation process.
