A recording medium, an apparatus and a method for recording and reproducing data of the recording medium, and a method for closing the recording medium are provided to change all non-recorded areas into recording areas so that a disc of a new version maintains backward compatibility within a previous recording/reproducing apparatus. A non-recorded area prior to the last location(A) where valid data is recorded in a recording medium is changed into a recording area. Identification information which indicates the last location where the valid data is recorded in the recording medium is recorded in the last location. A guide area is formed in the last location and the identification information is recorded in the guide area. Dummy data as the identification information is recorded in the guide area. Valid data as the identification information is recorded in the guide area.
