An LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) and a method for manufacturing the same are provided to increase the transmittance in proportional to voltage level regardless of polarity of external voltage, by dividing a unit pixel into two regions having different directions of spontaneous polarization. First and second ferroelectric liquid crystal layers(114,124) are respectively formed on opposite surfaces of first and second substrates(110,120). A unit pixel is divided into two regions having different directions of spontaneous polarization by the first and second ferroelectric liquid crystal layers. A nematic liquid crystal layer(150) is formed between the first and second ferroelectric liquid crystal layers. First and second transparent electrodes(112,122) are respectively formed on the opposite surfaces of the first and second substrates. A vertical field is applied to the first and second ferroelectric liquid crystal layers and the nematic liquid crystal layer through the first and second transparent electrodes. |
