PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stainless steel material having a smooth and glossy surface at a low cost. SOLUTION: The method for producing a stainless steel sheet comprises a process where a hot rolled sheet is subjected to shot blast treatment or scale braking treatment, is thereafter subjected to electrolytic abrasive grain area reduction treatment, and is further cold-rolled. The electrolytic abrasive grain area reduction treatment is performed in such a manner that, using a rotary area reduction head for electrolytic abrasive grain area reduction provided with a head pedestal and a rotary shaft, and in which electrode parts and grinding stone parts are arranged at the lower face of the head pedestal by two or more, respectively, as an electrolytic solution is made to flow between each electrode part and the stainless steel, voltage is applied to the electrode parts.
