PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for charging and discharging superconducting coils (12). SOLUTION: The system includes a boost converter (16) connected between a low voltage bus (20) and a high voltage bus (18), a buck converter (18) connected between the high voltage bus and a coil. The system charges and discharges coils without reversing electric currents, while reversing polarity, and is configured to supply high voltages only when mecessary. The system further includes means (42) for dissipating excess energy during discharge. The method includes a step for performing pulse width modulation of a solid-state switch of a boost converter to obtain a high voltage from a low voltage, and a step for switching the solid-state switch of a buck regulator to charge or discharge coils in a non current reversing, polarity reversing manner.
