PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of reducing an installation space while reducing a working space in a use state (an original-manuscript reading state) of the image reader. SOLUTION: The image reader includes a plate formed of a transparent plate or a translucent plate onto which an original manuscript to be read is set while being nearly vertically attached to other devices, a reading unit for reading the original manuscript to be read that is set onto the surface or the rear face of the plate, and a drive for horizontally or vertically moving the reading unit oppositely to the plate.
