The invention is directed to a bacteriolytic agent characterized by containing a cationic surfactant (A) whose counter anion is an acid with a pKa value (25°C) of 0 to 10. The counter ion is preferably a carboxylate anion. The cationic surfactant (A) is preferably a quaternary ammonium cyclic surfactant. Examples of a useful substance include proteins, amino acids, nucleic acids, antibiotics, sugars and vitamins. The bacteriolytic agent of the invention is excellent in a bacteriolytic ability in a step of extracting such a useful substance from a microorganism (such as a useful substance-producing microorganism). Further, degradation of such a useful substance during the step is small.
