The multi-purpose vanity dryer is housed in a casing (12) fitted in e.g. the bathroom and containing detachable air intake and heating unit (15) which is or can be connected to the electric mains by a switch connection. The hot air outlet adjoins or passes through air holes (14) in the housing wall. The housing also has a refillable source (22) of volatile substance such as deodorant, disinfectant, air freshener or insect repellant. A press-button time switch (23) is wired in parallel in the power supply to the air intake and heating unit so that the combined air intake and heating unit can be set in operation parallel to the timer (23) either by a press-button or independently by a manually operated on-off switch. The installations in the housing can be concealed by a sliding front panel (13). The dryer can be operated fixed in the casing and used as a head or body drier or can be removed and used as a hand-held hair dryer.
