The moistening system for a rotary printing machine has rollers, the one (7) in engagement with a plate cylinder (1) having a positive drive for imparting to this roller a peripheral speed slightly less than that of the plate cylinder. The drive to the roller includes a free wheel so that the roller can also be driven by frictional contact with its periphery. Normally the roller is driven by peripheral friction but if there is slip the free wheel engages and the roller is driven positively.
