A stacking shaft (37) which can be fed from above is closed at its lower end by a stack support (17). After each fed batch, the stacking shaft (37) together with the stack support (17) is rotated through 180 DEG . Carrier arrangements (33) driven in a reciprocating manner are assigned to the stacking shaft in order to push a finished stack away from the stack support (17). The carrier arrangements (33) are arranged so as to be rotatable together with the stacking shaft and, at the same time, means (81, 83, 84, 117, 119, 120) are provided in order to block the carrier arrangements (33) with respect to the stacking shaft (37), when the latter is rotating. The carrier arrangements (33) are thus elements which define the stacking shaft (37), and measures for aligning the carrier arrangements (33) with the stacking shaft (37) after each half-rotation of the latter are unnecessary. <IMAGE>
