PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which reduces consumption of ink by preventing excessive ink from being ejected, and also shortens a printing time. SOLUTION: A one-dimensional optical sensor of the same width as that of a head is arranged upstream of the ink ejection head in a carriage, so that the presence or absence of a printing medium is detected. When it is detected that the printing medium does not exist, nozzles of the head corresponding to the position are prohibited from ejection, thereby preventing the ink from being ejected to a spot where the medium does not exist. Use of useless ink is thereby avoided, and smudging of a machine interior and the medium with unnecessary ink is prevented. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
