PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a safety device of a passenger conveyor using a diffuse reflection type distance sensor to prevent an infant's hand from being caught into a clearance between a movable handrail and an inlet part. SOLUTION: This safety device of the passenger conveyor is provided with at least one distance sensor 5 which detects an object approaching the inlet part 4 of the movable handrail 2 provided in a newel basic part 3 of an entrance of the passenger conveyor, gives heed and warning to an approaching passenger, and is provided in such a way that it is at a position having predetermined height from a floor surface 1 of the entrance below a root part of the inlet part and in the front of the newel basic part to detect the approaching object. The maximum forward distance to be detected by the distance sensor is up to an inversion part 2a of the movable handrail, and a sensor beam 6 of the distance sensor is provided in such a way that a scope of its detection is a part within a tangential line 9 connecting the inversion part of the movable handrail with the newel basic part within a surface of projection and above the horizon 7 of a mounting position of the distance sensor when viewed from the direction of side face.
