PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermal printer which operates separation of a print head and a platen from each other easily by eliminating a load based on a paper feeding mechanism in the opening of a roll paper cover. SOLUTION: When a cover opening button 18 is pushed down in the direction an arrow B in the closed state of a cover frame 22, an operating force, which is applied to a lever push-down part 30a via the button 18 on the basis of "the principle of leverage", making the push-down part 30a serve as a point subject to the application of a force, making the center of a lever turning support shaft 28 serve as a fulcrum, and making a head push-down part 30b serve as a point of action, acts on the push-down part 30b which abuts on the print head 34, and urges the print head 34 in the direction of separation from the platen 48.
