PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inexpensively provide a method and a detector for detecting a rotation speed of an optical gyroscope, capable of restraining a nonlinear Kerr effect, induced Brillouin scattering, a polarization error, and inaccuracy caused by a bending loss related to a fiber resonator gyroscope based on a conventional type optical fiber, to the minimum, and capable of reducing an effect of an error mechanism of reducing measuring precision of the rotation speed. SOLUTION: This method/detector detects the rotation speed of a ring resonator around a shaft using a resonator having an air or vacuum free space optical path. The ring resonator is provided with a substrate 30, and reflectors 20, 22, 24, 26 formed or arranged on the substrate. The reflectors constitutes a closed optical path 39 and are constituted to direct the first and second light beams respectively to different propagation directions in the closed optical path. Respective frequencies of the first and second light beams are tuned to a resonance frequency of the resonator in a propagation direction along which the light beam is circulated in the closed optical path.
