PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smooth more uniformly a lubricant applied on the surface of an image bearing member so as to prevent formation of an abnormal image in an image forming apparatus in which the surface of the image bearing member after transferring a toner image is cleaned with a cleaning blade held by a blade holder, a lubricant is applied on the surface of the image bearing member after cleaned, and the applied lubricant is smoothed over the surface of the image bearing member by a smoothing blade. SOLUTION: The smoothing blade 32 is specified to have a JIS-A(K6301) hardness of 79 degrees or higher, a contact angleθof 10°or more with respect to the surface of the image bearing member 2Y and a contact line pressure of 0.01 N/cm or more.
