A method and a device for controlling power of an image display device are provided to enable the image forming device to automatically start a power saving mode if the same signal is repeated in an area for a predetermined time by setting the area without any user operation. A key input part(370) receives a command for setting a desired power mode from a user. A video processor(310) receives an RGB(Red/Green/Blue) video signal from a PC(100) and processes the RGB signal into a state displayable to a display module(350). A video signal detector(330) determines whether the same RGB video signal is inputted to the set area for the predetermined time. A controller(320) outputs a control signal according to a vertical/horizontal synchronization signal and a detection signal of the video signal detector. A power supply unit(340) autonomously controls a power state according to the control signal of the controller.
