PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress deterioration of color reproducibility due to changes of spectroscopic characterization of an LED, and carry out a stable image display of high image quality when changing brightness of a liquid crystal panel. SOLUTION: A plurality of LEDs 11 constituting a backlight are divided into a plurality of groups, light emitting brightness is controlled at every group, and controlled so that the average value of the light emitting brightness of all the LEDs 11 becomes to have a desired brightness. At this time, by light emission brightness control of respective groups, control ranges (variation width) of current value of the individual LEDs 11 are suppressed lower than before. Brightness of a display screen of the liquid crystal panel 16 illuminated by the LEDs 11 is controlled so as to have the desired value by the total light emission amount of the respective LEDs 11 light emission controlled at every group. By this, also in the case of changing brightness of the display screen, since the current control range of the individual LEDs 11 is small, the display of stable image quality become possible to be carried out without deteriorating the color reproducibility of the display screen.
