PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface inspection device and a method having a function for determining an abnormality of optical arrangement by simultaneous determination of a plurality of cameras in a metal belt width direction and by angle determination in a camera width direction. SOLUTION: This surface inspection device for inspecting optically the surface of a specimen formed by connecting a plurality of metal belts by welding is equipped with a self-diagnosis device for receiving reflected light from a weld zone of the specimen, and determining whether the optical arrangement of a light source and/or a light receiving device of the surface inspection device is normal or not based on a reflected light intensity distribution of the weld zone.
