PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an upsetting method by which the forming pressure can be reduced. SOLUTION: A guide 20 having an inserting hole 22 for holding the insertion in a state of restraining the buckling of a round bar-like blank 1 so as to be slidingly shiftable in the axial direction, and a receiving die 11 having a receiving part 12, are prepared. The blank 1 is set into the inserting hole 22 of the guide 20 and also, the projected part 1a of the blank projected from a blank outlet part 22a on the tip end surface 21 of the guide 20, is received with a receiving part 12 of the receiving die 11. Successively, while pressing the blank 1 with a pressing means 30 in the axial direction, the guide 20 is shifted in the reverse direction to the pressing direction of the blank 1. In this way, the exposing part 2 of the blank exposed in the interval between the tip end surface 21 of the guide 20 and the receiving part 12 of the receiving die 11, is expanded to the diameter in a diameter-expanded space S in the interval between the tip end surface 21 of the guide 20 and the receiving part 12 of the receiving die 11.
