<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a collision detector capable of detecting a collision precisely regardless of the position of the collision, and a protection device capable of protecting a vehicle occupant or a pedestrian precisely using the collision detector. <P>SOLUTION: An air bag device 1 includes the pedestrian collision detector 10, and an air bag ECU 11. A correcting unit 107d of the pedestrian collision detector 10 corrects an output signal from a light-receiving unit 107b on the basis of a signal on a collision position from a collision position detecting unit 107c. When the size of an output signal from the correcting unit 107d is equal to or greater than that of a preset value, a collision judging unit 107e judges that a pedestrian has collided with the vehicle. When the collision position is detected and it is judged, that the pedestrian has collided with the vehicle, the air bag ECU 11 puts out an ignition signal to actuate the protection device to protect the pedestrian.
