A portable terminal is provided to automatically adjust the brightness of image data photographed by a camera module and obtain image data of high image quality. When image data of an object are generated through a camera module(110), an optical sensor(120) senses the brightness around the object. A luminance sensing unit(140) senses the luminance of the image data generated through the camera module(110). A comparing and judging unit(150) compares and judges the luminance of the image data sensed in the luminance sensing unit(140) with the peripheral brightness measured in the optical sensor(120). When the luminance of the image data is lower than the peripheral brightness of the object according to the judged result of the comparing and judging unit(150), a control unit(160) compensates the luminance of the image data.
